A week of game drives, sunrise sightings and lessons on watching animals respectfully.
Nothing prepares you for the first time an elephant herd crosses the track in front of your jeep. Our week in the savannah was a lesson in patience: the best sightings came when we switched off the engine and simply waited.
Go with a licensed guide, keep your voice low and never ask the driver to get closer than is safe. Early mornings and late afternoons are when animals are most active, so plan to rest in the middle of the day.
Pack neutral clothes, a good pair of binoculars and a long lens if you have one. Most of all, bring time: the slower you travel, the more you see.
