Smart ways to save energy at home

Cooling, water heating and standby power: where most of your bill goes and how to cut it.
In our climate, air conditioning and water heating make up most of a home's electricity use, so small changes add up quickly.
Cooling
- Set the thermostat to 24 °C; each degree lower adds around 6% to cooling costs.
- Clean AC filters every month in summer.
- Close curtains on sun-facing windows in the afternoon.
Water and appliances
- Put the water heater on a timer.
- Run washing machines and dishwashers full, and on eco programmes.
- Switch off devices at the wall instead of leaving them on standby.
