A Train to the Unknown

Samer ·

How a night train journey became the opening scene of my next science fiction novel.

A woman reading a book by the window of a moving train

Some ideas arrive at a desk. This one arrived at two in the morning on a night train, when the carriage lights went out and the window became a mirror.

The question

What if a train kept running after its last station, and the passengers had to decide whether to get off?

From notebook to novel

  • I wrote the first page before the lights came back on.
  • Back home, the passengers became six strangers, each running from something.
  • The train became a ship crossing the gap between two worlds, the setting of the sequel to 2084: Sanctuary.
