An overview of popular blockchain platforms such as Ethereum, Bitcoin, and EOS
Fares
Bitcoin, Ethereum and EOS were built for different jobs. A quick comparison of what each does well.
Not every blockchain is trying to do the same thing. Three well-known platforms show how different the designs can be.
Bitcoin
The first and most secure network, focused on one job: moving and storing value. Its scripting is deliberately limited and changes are slow and careful.
Ethereum
A general-purpose platform for smart contracts. Most decentralised finance, NFTs and stablecoins run on it or on its layer-2 networks. Since 2022 it uses proof of stake.
EOS
Built for speed, with a small set of elected block producers and no fees for users. It is fast, but far fewer parties secure it.
How to choose
Ask what you need most: security of savings, a large ecosystem of apps, or cheap high-speed transactions. Each platform makes a different trade-off.
