The role of NFT’s in blockchain technology and their potential uses

Beyond profile pictures: what non-fungible tokens actually prove, and where they are useful.

A non-fungible token is a unique entry on a blockchain that says who owns a specific item. The item itself, an image or a ticket, usually lives elsewhere; the token is the receipt that anyone can verify.

Uses that hold up

  • Event tickets that cannot be forged and can be resold under the organiser's rules.
  • Certificates and diplomas that employers can check in seconds.
  • Royalties that return a share of every resale to the artist.
  • In-game items that players truly own and can trade.

Where to be careful

Owning a token does not always mean owning the copyright. Check what the licence grants, where the file is stored and who can change it.

My take

The speculative wave has passed. What remains is a useful tool for proving the ownership and history of digital things.
