Matching print to screen: a colour checklist for small studios

Samer

Why prints come out darker than the screen, and four habits that fix it before you pay for another proof.

A colourist working with swatches and a printed photo under a desk lamp

Almost every studio has a drawer of prints that looked perfect on screen.

Calibrate the monitor

A hardware calibrator is the best money a small studio can spend. Set the brightness lower than feels natural: most screens are far brighter than paper under a lamp.

Ask the printer for their profile

Print shops in Dubai and Sharjah will share the colour profile for their paper and press. Soft-proof with it before you send files.

Judge colour in the right light

Look at proofs under a daylight lamp, never under warm office lights or beside a window at sunset.

Keep a reference print

Print one test image with skin tones, greys and strong colours every time you change paper. Comparing it with the screen tells you more than any number.
