Choosing an accelerator: six questions to ask before giving up equity

Ziad Kanaan

Programmes in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh compete for the same founders. Here is how to tell which one will actually help you.

Founders working in an open-plan incubator space

Accelerators across the Gulf now offer desks, mentors, cash and a demo day. Many also ask for a share of your company, so it pays to compare them carefully.

What exactly do I get for the equity?

Ask for the cash amount, the services included and their market value, in writing.

Who are the mentors, and how often will I see them?

A list of famous names means little if each one gives you an hour in three months.

What happened to the last two cohorts?

Ask to speak to founders from earlier batches, including those who did not raise money afterwards.

Does the programme fit my market?

A programme tied to a free zone or a government partner can open doors to licences and customers, or limit where you can operate.

What do I owe if I leave early?

Read the exit terms before you sign, not after demo day.
