When the afternoon passes 45°C, most exercise plans stop. Five ways to keep yours going.

When the afternoon temperature passes 45°C, most exercise plans quietly stop. They do not have to.

Move the clock. Early mornings before seven and evenings after sunset are the coolest times to walk or run outdoors.

Go indoors. Several malls open early for walkers, and air-conditioned gyms and pools fill the gap at midday.

Drink before you are thirsty. Water and a little salt matter more in humid heat, especially if you exercise after work.

Lower the target. Thirty minutes of steady activity, five days a week, beats an ambitious plan that falls apart in July.

If you have a heart condition or diabetes, talk to your doctor before you change your routine.
