What voters want from the next parliament

Maya Ezzeddine

Cost of living, jobs for graduates and public services top voters’ concerns. Here is how the electoral lists answer them.

With polling day a few weeks away, the questions dominating candidates’ meetings in Amman, Irbid and Zarqa look familiar: the cost of living, jobs for young graduates and the state of public services.

What voters tell us

Our reporters spoke with more than two hundred voters in cities and villages across the country. Almost every conversation came back to monthly budgets: rent, fuel and school fees. Water and public transport followed closely, especially among younger voters.

How the lists respond

Most electoral lists have published programmes on jobs and prices, but few explain how they would pay for them. We compare the main proposals, what economists say is realistic and what parliament can actually change.

What to watch on the day

Turnout among voters under 35 will be the number to follow. We will report the results district by district as they are announced.
